Around The World Blog Tour

Hi guys!

Today I'm taking part of "Around the World Blog Tour". A chain of blog posts where bloggers make a presentation of themselves and their work, and they invite other bloggers to join the tour. I've been invited by Lorena, from My way of ... She is a talented bag maker and also an amigurumi maker. Check her fabulous post HERE and admire her bags, I love all them!

I would start with a few lines about me: My name is Helena. I'm economist, tax consultant, and teacher. I like reading economics handbooks, scientific papers, press, learning a lot and teaching economics. Boring things for many people ... And how a serious woman ends up making "funny amigurumis"? Well, balance is the key. There are many other things I also like, such as animation films, manga- I enjoy the Akira Toriyama's creation Dr. Slump and Arale !- kawaii designs- so cute!- and I like to invest my free time making crafts and trying to make new things. R&D is essential for economic growth but also for personal growth! ;)

What am I working on?

Right now, I'm struggling with my pattern notebooks! I have a lot of patterns I've written down in my creation process and they need to be converted to digital format. I have a hard work ahead. I like to make my patterns in three ways: written patterns, diagrams and photo-tutorials. Written patterns is the easiest part, but making diagrams takes a lot of time. To make photo-tutorials I usually need to elaborate the amigurmi again, because during the creation process I don´t use to take many pics- lighting issues, my creation time is the evening-. And to top it all off I'm trying to make them in three languages, English Spanish and Portuguese. I know is too much, that's why I'm so delayed. I have to find a way to solve this ...

My doom
I'm working on a new amigurumi, that will be born this autumn. It's a surprise so I can't show you much progress. But you can see some materials I'm using ... Do you guess what could it be?

I'm about to finish Hobbes, the most friendly tiger I've ever met, an amigurumi created by Ann Stiver-Balla (Suki) and Ana Amélia Mendes Galvão (Miahandcrafter) based on Calvin & Hobbes comic. It's also the biggest amigurumi I've ever made! Great pattern, easy to follow.

And finally,I made all these suns, stars, clouds and a moon last week , with no propose, just for the pleasure of crocheting. Most of them were made with the leftovers of the skeins I used to make a big Maya and Willy. By the way, the yarn is Lamana Cosma (yellow and white), great cotton I found at La Maison Bisoux shop.

How does my work differ from others of its genre?
I'm not sure about this. I think my work is not so different from other amigurumis. Sometimes I try to make amigurumis with local topics, such as Pandigueiro, Demo Assobiador, a Pilgrim ... all them were taken from the Galician culture. That makes them less popular, since the characters are not well known at international level. However that also makes them unique, in some way... Even though there is something that differ from others, my animated pictures! Well, honestly, is not my work, is my brother who makes them and donates them generously to my blog. Great guy! The pictures below were edited by him- we had not time to edit previous pics, I do apologize-.

Why do I create amigurumis?
Just for fun! Making amigurumis is my hobby :)

¿Por qué hago amigurumis?
Esa es muy sencilla: porque me divierto. Hacer amigurumis es mi hobby.

How does my creating process work?
The idea never comes in the same way. Parrulo Duck was created in a hurry. I needed a Christmas gift for a lovely baby and I made it in two or three hour's.  I visualised the shape I was looking for, and I made it in a few attempts, using leftovers and hooks I had at home. I was lucky!

Other amigurumis were created methodologically, starting by making a drawing and selecting colours carefully. Next step is to find the materials, searching at several stores. And then the hardest part arrives: getting the desired shapes, working by essay and error.  This is the case of Dracolina, Eva María, or Christmas Ornaments Edition, among others.

In other cases the amigurumis are based on the designs of other authors, such as Pandigueiro, Willy, Joanet or Pebbles among others. In these cases I don't need to make a drawing, and the following steps are the same exposed in the previous case.

When I created my first amigurumis- a Rabbit and two Aliens- I forgot to write down the patterns and I can't reproduce them. Never again. Since then, when I create a new amigurumi I have always a pen and a notebook around to take notes... and a camera to take pictures!

And what's next?
Well, I have a lot of unfinished work, as you can see, but my mind never stops and I have many amigurumi projects that I want to develop. I'll alternate new projects with pendent work. People have to move on.

I think I've talked enough about me. Let me introduce you to two exceptionally gifted galician ladies:

Anxo: She is the woman behind Enemy Dolls, a complete crafts blog, where you can find her talents making amigurumis, knitting, sewing and more. Don't miss her tips and her patterns!

Io:  As me, she is an amigurumi maker, but professionallyShe makes customized amigurumis, with lots of detail and excellent finishing. She has a very personal touch. Her blog is Actante Dorado.

And that's all! I hope you enjoy it :D
